After experiencing first-hand the magical healing powers of herbs in India, I felt passionate about bringing that same herbal power to people through my Ayurvedic practice in Somerset – which I’d set up five years before Pukka was created.

I soon realised that it wasn’t going to be easy getting the high quality organic herbs I wanted to share with people – and I wasn’t going to settle for second best! So I went about sourcing the herbs myself, returning again and again to the place that had first inspired me to work with plants and people all those years ago: India.

The search for herbal quality begins

In my quest for quality, I found myself on small farms in the middle of nowhere, scouring wild habitats and hedgerows where I knew I’d find incredible herbs growing freely – much like they do here in the UK.

My searching paid off: I discovered many different varieties growing wildly, such as amla, gotu kola, tulsi, all full of nature’s therapeutic potential.

Bringing herbal goodness back home

As beautiful as the herbs were, there was no order to their growing, no organic certification, and no way to dry them for use back home. The only way I could bring the magic of these powerful plants to other people, was if I helped the farmers with herb cultivation, care and harvesting – luckily, I had some experience after my years spent working at an organic farm in Somerset.

After a few years of trial and error we started to get the results we wanted: herbs that were of the very highest quality, produced sustainably, traded fairly, and in partnership with the farms where they are grown. I had a source of the very finest herbs for my business, and my farming friends had additional skills and a new, regular stream of income – a virtuous circle, if you like; one that I try to replicate wherever my search for incredible quality herbs leads me.

Delicious and effective – it’s the Pukka difference

This virtuous circle of quality assurance is the same principle that governs how Pukka grows and buys herbs to this day – we only use the very highest grade organic herbs bought fairly from growers we have been in partnership with, often for many years.

So, the reason that Pukka teas taste like no other? Because we have a blueprint for our ingredients, our partners, and our Pukka world – a simple goal that we never stop striving to reach: be the best.

Let’s all drink (a delicious herbal tea) to that.
